What is Indie Music?

Indie music is referred to as music released without the artist signing onto a major label company. Big labels like Sony BMG, Warner, EMI, Universal, often only focus on mainstream type hits. They are looking for a certain type of sound that can be accepted by the mass population.

The indie music scene began in the early 80′s when groups of music artists decided to do everything on their own instead of pushing for major record labels to sign them. It was first labeled as alternative rock, which focused more on producing quality music vs  the “mainstream” niche. This can often make things difficult for good independent music to get exposure. So what is independent music? It can simply be defined as music that isn’t focused on pleasing the mainstream audience.
