The behaviourists of the last century would have you believe that dogs, as well as other animals, are just reflex machines, responding blindly to external stimuli. We now know that this view of the natural world is very narrow minded, and there’s nothing to suggest that dogs, cats et al aren’t self-conscious, and so vulnerable to suffering, pain and emotional stress.Anyone who has ever owned a dog will probably argue that their sense of self isn’t up for question. Of course dogs are self-aware, but more than this they are aware of the world around them, including their supposed masters, us.
Dogs are unique in that their evolution has run parallel to our own. Humans essentially guided the evolution of dogs, and so we are one of their most important environmental stimuli. Ethically, this means that we have responsibility for the welfare of dogs.
Unfortunately, we have forced dogs to interbreed and favoured qualities that can have negative side-effects for the animal. This has led, for one, to a higher propensity for painful conditions like arthritis. This can cause real suffering in dogs, however we do have a chance to help them ease their pain.
This can be done with the right medication, such as Previcox and Fortekor. Previcox is an anti-inflammatory medication, and can be used to treat the pain associated with arthritis. All these medications and more are available online, at Pet Meds.
