Cloning Endangered Animal Species in Brazil

Starting next month scientists at the Brasilia Zoo will begin cloning 8 wild animals in an attempt to save them from extinction. Brazil will be the 3rd country, along with the US and South Korea, working on the cloning of wild animals.

The science of cloning has come a long way since the successful cloning of Dolly the sheep in Edinburgh in 1996. Dolly was the first mammal cloned from an adult cell. The 8 species the Brasilia Zoo will attempt to clone include the maned wolf, brush dog, grey brocket deer, bison, jaguar, black lion tamarin monkey, collared anteater, and the Brazilian aardvark.

Wild Animal Cloning in Brazil

2 years has been spent gathering 420 genetic samples of these animals from dead animals found in the outback of Brazil. All these samples are necessary for a process that has a 5-7% average success rate. Researchers at the Brasilia Zoo have previously produced over 100 living clones of cows and horses but the process for wild animals is different and the next stage is to get those researchers trained.

That training will take place while the group waits for legal approval to begin the cloning process.
Carlos Frederico Martins, one of the head researchers, would not say how long it could take to produce the first clone but he did say it would likely be a maned wolf.

If they are successful in cloning a jaguar they will be the first ones to clone a big cat. With only about 15,000 jaguars it would be a welcome relief. Though, the zoo has said that they would only release the cloned animals into the wild if the species was nearing total extinction.

Is My Pet Overweight?

If you’re worried that your pet has started to put on a bit of weight recently, then you should act straightaway. Pet obesity is a serious problem which should not be left untreated, as it can lead to serious health conditions which may be irreversible. If you don’t have any already, invest in a set of standard bathroom scales to weigh your dog or cat and continue to do so regularly. However, this will be of no use to you if you don’t know what a healthy weight for your pet should be! Check with your vet or do some research online, making sure to find the right weight for your breed and age of pet.If you find that your pet is overweight – and as much as 20% above a normal body weight counts as obesity – then you need to start investigating why and make inroads into changing these patterns of behaviour. If you feed your dog or cat scraps from your own cooking or meals, stop doing this immediately, as human food does not have the right nutrients that an animal requires. Change instead to a quality pet food, such as those by Hill’s Pets.

Hill’s Pets Prescription Diet foods have been developed with vets, nutritionists and food scientists around the world to contain only the best ingredients and are proven for helping with dog and cat weight loss. Don’t make the change of food instantly, as this will actually disrupt your pet, but introduce the food gradually over a period of seven days by mixing it increasingly into their current food.

What Does it Mean if Your Dog Keeps Coughing

It can be very distressing if your dog keeps coughing. Just like with humans, it can be an obvious symptom of disease, the severity of which can vary. Your dog might be suffering from a temporary discomfort, or they might have a more serious medical condition like a tracheal collapse.Just as people cough from time to time, so can dogs. They might have something stuck in their throat, or might just be dehydrated. This obviously isn’t something very serious, and so is no call for alarm. Alarm bells should begin to ring when your dog is coughing all the time, has a heavy cough or is gagging.

If you suspect that something is wrong, and your dog keeps coughing, then you should consult your vet. It’s all very well looking for advice online, however only the professionals will know how to effectively cure your animal.

They might diagnose something called a tracheal collapse. Briefly, this is where the normal C shaped trachea (in a dog’s throat) begins to look more like a U, which can then result in a painful, acute cough. Tracheal collapse can be treated with cough suppressants and sedatives, which are designed to ease the physical discomfort of your dog.

The things to look out for are a persistent cough, or a cough that sounds unhealthy. Coughs that result from tracheal collapse may also sound like a goose honking rather than an actual cough. If you need more advice look for Hills Pets online, for lots of Hills Pets products and advice.

Strange Creature Discovered under the Brooklyn Bridge

A new discovery, a new species, what is it exactly. This strange beast was found under the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday and no one can quite identify it. Experts are claiming it may be some time of hybrid and maybe even a half pig half monkey type of cross breed.
What is this strange animal found under the Brooklyn Bridge?

A similar type of creature has been appearing on plum island known as the Montauk Monster which people believed it to be a hairless bloated raccoon. Others have disproved the animal to be a raccoon and signs seem to point to a hybrid cross breed of something. Are there mad scientist at work?

How To Pick The Perfect Pet For Your Lifestyle

Humans have been keeping companion animals since the dawn of history. Usually they were meant to be useful in some way. A dog could help in a hunt, a cat could keep pests away etc. Nowadays, most people keep pets simply because of the lovely feeling they give us. Animal enthusiasts the world over can tell you how wonderful they feel when their pet greets them when they get home from work. However, if you are planning on a getting a new pet to love and keep you company, there are a few key things you will want to keep in mind. Here are a few helpful tips to help you find the perfect pet for your lifestyle:

How Much Time Do You Have To Devote To Your Pet?

This is one of the chief concerns when getting a pet. If you aren’t home much of the day, or if you don’t have the time to spend long hours with your pet, you will need to find a rather low maintenance pet. Think about the kind of pets you usually see hanging out with people. Dogs and cats are pretty sociable animals and dogs especially need a lot of human interaction to be happy. If you don’t have at least an hour or more out of your day when you can get out to exercise your dog, train them and play with them, then it might not be fair to the dog if you decide to take on a responsibility you are ill equipped to fulfill.

Cats are a little different. They get house trained pretty quick and they don’t need much more exercise than dashing out from under your bed to attack your socks or jumping up on your couch. However, while many cats are very independent and don’t mind spending most of the day unattended, other cats may feel lonely if you leave them in the house all by themselves. Since each cat has a different personality, it is important to take this into account when you decide to get a cat.

One solution to this, if you decide you want a cat or dog, is to get an older animal. Kitties and puppies are cute, but you never really know what you are getting personality-wise. With an older animal, you will be able to see what their temperament is like, already, and then judge whether this is inline with the type of person you are and the type of commitment you can make towards your pet.

If you don’t think you have the time for the care and maintenance of one of these pets, it’s better to get a lower maintenance pet. Reptiles, fish, crabs and animals in the rodents family, like gerbils, rats and hamsters, are usually pretty easy to take care of. It will take about fifteen minutes out of your day to feed them and you’ll probably need to clean the tank or cage at least once a week or so. Some birds can be pretty low maintenance, you simply need to check if they have food and water and keep their cage clean. Others can be VERY high maintenance, like larger parrots or exotic birds like Lories that eat fruit and can be quite messy.

What Is Your Budget?

Most animals are pretty inexpensive to feed, but you will need to think about other expenses like veterinarian bills and pet insurance if you are renting an apartment. Many landlords charge a pet-deposit for any animal other than fish. This can be pretty hefty; often in the range of $300. So even if you get a pet as a gift from someone, you will still have to “pay for it”.

Exotic animals like large birds or fancy fish are often not only initially expensive, they can also be expensive to care for as they may need special food or other things to keep them happy and healthy.

What Is Your Schedule?

Something that is not always considered when choosing a pet, is whether they are nocturnal or diurnal. If you work during the day, and your pet is a nocturnal animal like a hamster or cat, when you come home you will expect to go to sleep. However, your pet will expect to play!! Many times I have been woken at night by my cat playing “catch” with my feet. If you have a hamster and you keep the cage or tank in your room, you will likely be annoyed by the little “squeaks” that will constantly come from the hamster wheel or ball. However, if you are usually up at night, these kind of pets can be welcome companions when most of the rest of the world around you is quiet and sleeping.

Whatever pet you choose, the most important thing is that you think not only of what you want in a pet, but what that particular pet needs from you. Even the most loving pet owners can be neglectful because they simply don’t have the time or proper knowledge to care for their pet. If you are interested in a certain animal as a pet, do your research and find out as much as you can about that animal. Once you are armed with this information, you will be able to judge whether or not this pet is the one for you!
