The design of a room is not only about furniture and wall paint. Good lighting is required in order to make it comfortable while highlighting certain elements of the room’s décor. Most of the times, inhabitants fail to associate the warm atmosphere of a room with the lighting but these trade secrets of interior design are actually more accessible than ever.

Utilization

The function of the lighting designs is the first thing that needs to be considered. Depending on the purpose for which the illumination is required, the e function is separated into three categories. Creative task lighting is used for different specialized activities such as reading, writing, cooking and even crafting. These types of activities require a powerful source of light whereas ambient lighting is mainly used to illuminate an entire room. Last but not least, accent lighting can be used to highlight decorative objects such as pieces of art or plants.

Choosing The Right Kind Of Light

When choosing the right kind of light for certain functions, some general rules apply. Wall and ceiling fixtures are generally accepted as ambient light sources. When used in a laundry room, they change their role to task lighting. For other activities there are different types of pendant lights, lamps, desk lights and even lights mounted under a cabinet are included in the category of task lights. The kitchen should contain mostly task lighting and general ceiling fixtures. In the living room, ambient light play a much more important role and task lights such as lamps are less present. At the same time, these rules are not set in stone. The lighting of the room must match the tasks that will be performed there.

When looking at accent lighting options, they should be around three times brighter than the ambient light. If the light source is powerful enough, there will be a visible difference between the accent lighting and the ambient one, making the art piece to stand out. Accent lighting is usually seen in living rooms and in exterior design.

Atmosphere

A poorly illuminated room makes get tired easily but if some red low intensity wall fixtures are added, the atmosphere suddenly becomes romantic. Mood lighting is essential when trying to make room atmosphere. Interior design relies heavily on illumination to influence the atmosphere. Metallic light is usually associated with bright rooms while low lights create cosy and romantic feel.

Harmony

Interior designers have used illumination as a means to create harmony between certain pieces of décor that otherwise would not fit perfectly together. While the lighting attempts to create harmony and a fluent room design feel, it must not draw attention to itself. The source of light is never noticed as a design element despite the fact that it plays an important role for the entire décor. These design tricks are possible with the aid of accent lighting and fixtures. The light intensity, color and function must match the one of the furniture, room design, wall paint and even decorative items.
