Which Metal is Best for Pendants for Men?

Pendants for men are more popular now than ever before. The biggest reason is likely the fact that contemporary men feel more comfortable expressing their own individuality through the jewelry they wear. For this reason, jewelry artisans have started to create a huge variety of styles in pendants for men. Just as the style selection has increased, so has the number of materials now used in men’s jewelry.

If you’re shopping for a pendant for the man in your life, you might be surprised at just how many styles and materials there are to choose from. Although you’ll still find plenty of necklaces for guys made from precious metals, you’ll also find a large selection made from more contemporary materials, and each one has its advantages and disadvantages.

Which Metal is Best for Pendants for Men?

  • Titanium: This material was once referred to as the “space age metal.” Titanium is extremely strong and crack-resistant, yet it’s incredibly lightweight. It’s also hypoallergenic, which is an important consideration if your man has a metal allergy. Titanium’s natural color is gunmetal grey, but black titanium pieces are also quite popular. Although the “space age metal” is very durable, it can be scratched.
  • Tungsten carbide: Some of the most popular pendants for men are those made from another contemporary material, tungsten carbide. Tungsten is heavier than titanium, which appeals to some men. This metal is exceptionally durable. In fact, tungsten carbide is one of the hardest of all manmade materials. Although it’s very scratch-resistant, it can crack if it’s hit hard enough.  Tungsten’s natural color is metallic gray, but it also comes in a variety of other finishes, such as black and gold tone. Tungsten dog tag pendants are one of the most popular styles in men’s jewelry.
  • Stainless steel: This contemporary metal is actually a steel alloy made with a small percentage of chromium. When you think of stainless steel, you might imagine cookware and household appliances. While you can still find plenty of kitchen gadgets made of stainless steel, this remarkably durable metal is now quite common in both men and women’s jewelry. If your guy leads an active lifestyle, a pendant made of stainless steel might be a great choice. Look for one in a striking tribal design if your man prefers a truly contemporary style.
  • Gold: Although relatively expensive, gold is still among the most popular materials used in jewelry for both men and women. This precious metal is actually an alloy of pure gold and other metals. While there are many shades of gold available, yellow, white and rose gold are more typically used in jewelry than other hues. If your budget allows you to consider gold pendants for men, remember that the purity of gold is determined by the number of karats, three varieties of which are most common in jewelry: 10k gold (41.6% pure gold); 14k (58.3%); and 18k (75%). Gold is a relatively soft metal, which is an advantage if you want it inscribed, but a disadvantage in that it scratches fairly easily. Remember also that white gold is often coated with rhodium, and those pieces need to be recoated after a certain amount of time.

When trying to decide which material is best for the man in your life, take into consideration whether or not he prefers a lightweight metal, whether he has a metal allergy, how durable the material needs to be and how often he’s likely to wear it. Once you’re armed with that information, the only thing left is to select the right style among the wide variety of pendants for men now available in the marketplace. If you have any doubt, don’t hesitate to ask your man to help you make a selection. He’ll be the best judge when it comes to choosing the style and material, and he’ll be much more likely to wear the pendant often if he has a hand in the selection.
